What's Trendy?
The top trending topic at 1:04 a.m. last night was fat people. Well, it was numerous stories about a fat stigma spreading across the world. Apparently it all stemmed from a report in the N.Y. Times where health officials fear some backlash about all the anti-obesity ads that have been developed recently will continue to give people a bad body image and thus low self-esteem. As a fat man I do have low self-esteem but that could be just as closely related to my professional and romantic failures.
What confounds me more than anything is that our culture seems health obsessed compared to the past (aerobics, taebo, Subway low calories sandwiches, Weight Watchers, etc.) yet we’re much more obese and unhealthy than ever before, which I’m sure McDonalds and Taco Bell have something to do with. I guess at the end of the day we just have to let people make their own decisions and live with the consequences. It’s not rocket science. If you keep getting fatter you might need to change things up. Or don’t, who cares?
