They're Throwing Hooks But Not Hook Shots

It’s almost NBA playoff time again and aside from another two months of basketball that also means more basketball fights. These guys fight a lot even when the games mean basically nothing so raising the stakes is like throwing a 40 oz. in front of two bums and watching them go at it. To get us in the mood I included last week’s fight – oddly between players on two teams that had less chance making the playoffs this season than I had of winning ‘The Bachelor.’

No one is sure exactly how this started as Charlie Villanueva won’t get too specific but he did say this to the Detroit Free Press:
“He threw an elbow, caught me in my leg. I told him, ‘Just watch that elbow.’ He said something real smart so I got angry in the heat of the moment, that’s about it.”

I’m betting Ryan Hollins told Villanueva that he should watch the elbows instead since he didn’t have eyebrows to get in the way. Apparently being told he looks like a cancer patient seems to be a major sticking point for him. http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nba/news/story?id=5759196 I do have to give big ups to Big Charlie though for sprinting to the Cavs’ locker room to wait for Hollins and telling police he’d kill him. It’s a retro move reminiscent of the Rick Fox/Doug Christie smackdown from years past.

The awesome thing about this fight was it was a preseason game and after the situation was initially calmed Rick Fox sprinted across the court into the Kings’ locker room area and started swinging at Christie again. That’s when Vlade Divac and Shaq (who wasn’t playing and wearing a suit no less) started brawling too. That was a fun rivalry.
