As you might expect more than half of the top trending topics today are Osama bin Laden related, as they probably should be. The U.S. media certainly gets tunnel vision when it comes to a story but at least there seems to be a lot left to discuss involving this one, as new information streams in daily about the nature of bin Laden’s demise.
The headline I picked up on today was the possible release of a post-killing photo of OBL, a video of his funeral at sea and a final tape recorded by the 9/11 mastermind before his death.
The only argument against releasing any of the photo/video seems to be the idea that it would inflame terrorists but I’d have to imagine that if America’s enemies were any more inflamed they could set their U.S. flags ablaze with their eyes. The truth is that al Qaeda has been splintered and rendered painfully ineffective. It’s more important to prove to doubters that OBL is in fact dead.
The funeral video would also do well to prove to that the handling of his corpse wasn’t an affront to Islam. Personally I think we should have chopped off his head and let Dick Clark use it as the disco ball for the 2012 Rockin’ New Year’s Eve but I’m sure the route chosen was actually the right one.
And as for bin Laden’s final tape – let’s see it too. Maybe we can air it alongside footage of the posh mansion he was living in and show his followers how full of shit he really was. Maybe it will be a bit like this.
