Despite seeming to be self-absorbed and confident in my BYB scribblings those in my inner circle actually know that I’m pessimistic about the blog and worried that no one actually reads it. From time to time I even seek affirmation by scrolling through the archives to see if anyone has commented on a past story. In was in one of those searches that I received a boost to my self-esteem.
One of my first stories on the blog in 1999 was the tale of a lady, Tabitha Darling, who started a controversy in Fort Worth with the use of her Seeing Eye horse. Her use of the horse sparked criticism from blind in the community who were only crafty enough to use Seeing Eye dogs. At the time I didn’t delve too deeply in the controversy, I just made a few jokes.
This horse is a freaking genius. If I have any readers in Fort Worth can you please get me some video of this horse in Target or at the drive through lane? In fact run up and snag her burgers and see if the horse freaks out. Give them back after though. I'm not advocating fuc*king with the blind. That's mean.
And the lady with the dog can just zip it. I think she's just jealous she didn't think of it.
Little did I know that as this story lay dormant in the archives it was a seed of potential communication with the subject. Tabitha Darling herself eventually commented on the story and despite my insensitive comments, she was happy I posted the story.
Thank you for posting the story and your compliment. I am Tabitha Darling. As to Trixie's reaction, she would probably be offended. She's used to getting lunch or dinner when I do (we eat out alot together) I would NOT recommend anyone try a prank. I've been in situations where a man tried to hurt her, chase us, someone once threw lit fireworks at us, dogs have attacked among other things over the years. I would put my life down to protect her, for all she's done for me. And the only reason I do these news deals is to get folks thinking. Whats amusing, are those who think this is an attention thing. I think they forget that every single time I head out to do anything with her we always get a crowd. An everyday occurance. News bits are nothing.
Thank you to Tabitha Darling for making me feel worthwhile. I would normally question how she was able to read the blog, being blind and all, but that’s probably insensitive to the blind. I’m gonna guess that either a friend read it to her or Trixie has learned to read and talk. Either way I’m just happy the BYB has another reader.
That's actually pretty cool that she commented. I thought I was your only commenter.
