Any doubt that we would return to the same ridiculous, bipartisan political dialogue following killing of Osama bin Laden was erased late last week was cleared up with the hubbub surrounding the White House’s poetry night.
Conservatives were enraged that the poetry event at the White House included a performance by rapper Common, whose raps are so controversial that he’s best known as being one of the bad guys from ‘Date Night.’
Nevertheless FOX News’ crack research team found two controversial rhymes by Common where he talked of shooting at police (which he later denounces in the same song) and slams President George W. Bush.
Of course this was enough to get Sean Hannity and the rest of the FOX team’s panties in a bunch and they made a giant issue of a non-story, following the birther formula that worked so well the last couple years.
The far right would want us to believe that Common is 2pac, Griff X from 'CB4' and Minister Farrakhan wrapped in one but in truth he’s about as racy as Al Roker. In full disclosure I have a Common CD (purchased by a former roommate) and I’ve found nothing controversial about it, or anything good about it either.
As you could expect Common performed a positive and uplifting rap about Obama and didn’t once threaten to kill white people in the streets.
I shouldn’t really be surprised that Conservatives picked this battle to fight. I just wish they had the hindsight to see how hypocritical it is. Last time I checked the Republicans held the advantage in inviting controversial rappers to the White House.
I suppose their forgetting the time Old Man Bush and Bob Dole had Eazy E over to dinner at the White House after he donated $2,500 to the Republican Party at the behest of Phil Gramm. That’s back when the GOP was a big tent.
President Bush wasn’t going to shy away from a rapper who trumped Common on any anti-authority stance with a song called “Fuck the Police.”
I could go on all day about how stupid this story is but I’ll leave it to the professional.
