In a world filled with stories about cyber bullying, school shootings and teen sex gone rampant it’s nice to know there are actually a few kiddos out there who might not run this country into the ground when they get out of school and this kid certainly fits the bill.
This Chicago Sun Times article outlines the story of a 10-year-old kid from Pittsburgh who dipped into his college fund to buy former Chicago Bear defensive tackle William “The Refrigerator” Perry’s Super Bowl ring which was owned and displayed by Mickey Mantle’s Steakhouse in New York.
The kid really enjoyed having a Super Bowl ring of a player who reached instant national fame during his rookie season in 1985 for being the portly defensive rock of the Bears 46 defense. But after doing some more investigating about The Fridge online the kid found out that Perry had sold the ring to make up for expenses during his bout with Guillain-Barre syndrome he did a truly amazing thing. He flew to Chicago, found Perry at an autograph session and gave the ring back.
The kid told the Sun Times:
“I Googled Mr. Perry and saw that he had a disease and had to sell it because of rough times. He only played in one Super Bowl. I thought he would want it more than I did.”
There aren’t a lot of good stories about teens and preteens these days. They’re mostly playing Halo and calling their classmates fat skanks on Facebook. But every once in a while one comes along and reinstalls some faith in the next generation of the human race.
