Woman allegedly swapped baby for house

MEXICO CITY - Mexican authorities have detained a young mother on suspicion of selling her 8-month-old daughter in exchange for a house and undisclosed payments.
Prosecutors in western Michoacan state say the baby's maternal grandmother told authorities her daughter gave the girl to a local couple and talked of getting a house in return.
The couple were also detained.
Prosecutors identified the mother as 19-year-old Maria del Rosario Santos Martinez. The office said in a statement Sunday that Santos Martinez is a single parent who already had one child and apparently couldn't support another.
No formal charges were immediately filed, and there was no attorney of record for the suspects.
I guess I don't see how this is different from adoptions in the U.S. Women here carry babies for couples for money, right? So this lady just accepted house as payment. Basically, these people are getting jammed up for not filling out the proper paperwork. In no way am I endorsing the black market sale of children, but I think Mexico has a little more on its plate right now. There was a shootout on my former campus Friday and the soccer games had to be cancelled. Step 1) Stop the drug war and beheadings. Step 2) Cut down on the illegal baby trade. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
