1862 – American Civil War: George B. McClellan halts the northward drive of Robert E. Lee's Confederate army in the single-day Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest day in American history.

Births
1927 – George Blanda, American football player
1942 – Robert Graysmith, Zodiac killer researcher
1945 – Phil Jackson, American basketball player and NBA head coach
1948 – John Ritter, American actor (d. 2003)
1956 – Rita Rudner, American comedian
1974 – Rasheed Wallace, American basketball player
1975 – Jimmie Johnson, American race car driver

A bittersweet day in the BYB with my man Phil Jackson's b-day, but also John Ritter's b-day. You think people went crazy over Michael Jackson's death. You should have seen me after John Ritter's death. I was a mess for a week.
