OHS celebrates 100 years of mispelling the name of its macot
A century of red and white
OHS celebrates 100 year anniversary
BY LAUREN DRINKARD/Odessa American
Odessa High School celebrated a century of existence with food, spirit and a lot of red and white.
The celebration began with a parade from Austin Elementary, which stands near the location of the original high school, and ended at present day OHS. Participants included the softball team, football team, theater and art departments, band and several other organizations. The art department decided to capitalize on the popularity of the jackrabbits around town and created their own versions of Bronchos.
Bonfire Video here.
"The students got to pick their own themes," art department head Beckie Ervin said.
Among the themes were one that included all the years OHS has been open, various cultures and a western theme with a Broncho wearing a saddle. Ervin found a little humor in that.
"Of course, you can’t break a Broncho," Ervin laughed.
The theater department devoted their attire to a whimsical representation of each decade the school has been open. A flapper girl, Cyndi Lauper, swing kids and mod girls all made the parade trek.
"We wanted to capture what the students looked like and what they wore," theater teacher Chyree Lemaster said.
Once the parade arrived at the school, past, present and future Bronchos converged.
The rest of the story with pleasant anecdotes from past graduates is here. I'm not going to go to in to depth about this story. I just thought it was worth a quick read. t's been refreshing being back in my hometown and my time at OHS was a really formative time in my life as I met most of my friends there. So its worth a read for any red and white grad. And if you went to Permian, then screw you! Its OHS/Permian week!
P.S. - I genuinely thought Bronco had an 'H' in it until I got to college. The fact we intentionally mispell that word might be the most rednecky thing about Odessa. And that is Sammy Hagar.
