1917 – Russia is officially proclaimed a republic.
1959 – The Soviet probe Luna 2 crashes onto the Moon, becoming the first man-made object to reach it.
1987 – The Toronto Blue Jays set a record for the most home runs in a single game, belting 10 of them.
1994 – The Major League Baseball season is canceled because of a strike.
Births
1849 – Ivan Pavlov, Russian scientist, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (d. 1936)
1969 – Tyler Perry, American actor
1973 – Nas, American rapper
1983 – Amy Winehouse, English singer
1987 – Michael Crabtree, American football player
Well with the exception of Mr. Pavlov, whose groundbreaking work in dog salivation paced many a discussion in my psych/mass comm classes, this day is largely a day for d-dags. Tyler Perry and Amy Winehouse. That's too much for anyone to stand and for you Mr. Crabtree, I've got a special b-day present for you.
