Stay cool, never change and have a great summer!
Even in a recession, high school yearbooks continue to sell
By Kendyl Sebesta/FOR THE AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
Estacado High School yearbook adviser Kym Douglas is making a change this year.
After 15 years of limited sales and student input, the Estacado yearbook has returned this year to increase sales significantly further than it has in the past 20years.
"The program has had a difficult time appealing to students in the past in terms of student input and direction," Douglas said. "But this year we've sold roughly 53 yearbooks so far and usually order around 100, which may sound small but is a huge deal for us. I think last year only 15 or so were sold and that number was even smaller in the last 10 to 15 years."
Jerry Clark, Taylor Publishing sales representative, said larger high schools in West Texas typically sell yearbooks at a cost of $50 to $70 while smaller high schools offer an average price between $35 and $50. Taylor is a national yearbook publishing companies.
Damn! I'm in the wrong business. During this recession I have thought about going back into the liquor business. Maybe getting a small business loan for a bar or a liquor store but now I see the real money is supplying these sappy, useless books to teens. They're convinced they have to have them even though the books will end up shoved in a shoe box in their mom's closet (where mine are). I can just picture some poor dad down to his last buck forking over a hard earned $50 so his daughter can scribble over pictures of the dudes she has banged with a marker. CA-CHING!
