College Coaching Carousel
I'm not going to delve too deeply into any story about the fired/retired coaches. I think I've made my opinions about Bobby Bowden quite clear and those opinions are far from unique or controversial. I am going to miss the sweet old grandpa of college football. I guess what this story glosses over is that the crotchety old granpda - Joe Paterno - has now effectively won the all-time coaching win race. I would have obviously preferred that Bowden won but in recent years I've warmed to Paterno and I'm glad to see this race finished. So congrats to Paterno and Bowden who both gave us years of classic college football moments.
Now, onto the fired coaches, which is highlighted of course by King FUDA Charlie Weis. It was inevitable that Weis was going to get the axe after the Navy loss and truth be told, if Notre Dame had the buyout money and support last season those in charge would have made the change then. I'm sure this has been stressful for Weis as it seemed he had accepted his fate. He looked sullen in his last two defeats unlike last season when he seemed indignent whent the topic of his firing came up. I'm sure we'll see Weis coaching in the NFL again soon but I wouldn't be surprised to see him take some time off.
My biggest question is, how is Mangino still not fired? My only theory is that the "internal investigation" into Mangino's treatment of players must officially end and publish findings. Then Kansas may be able to can him without paying the full buyout. Smart move. I bet Mangino was hoping he would get his full quote so he could buy a Blimpie's franchise in Scranton. Now he'll probably have to coach guards at Kansas State next year.
