College Football Wrap Up

I cozied up on the couch this week to enjoy what I was sur would be the worst slate of game I've seen in years. It's true what they say about the joys of low expectations. I came away from this weekend pleasantly surprised with the action. Of course the dominating peformnce of the Blackshirts certainly didn't hurt.

Boise State at Lousiana Tech
The Broncos certainly didn't do themselves any favors this week. With most of the college football media searching for a reason to justify dropping Boise below Oregon, the Broncs gave them ammunition with a second half meltdown in Ruston, La. Then the Ducks crapped the bed against Stanford, further hurting Oregon's chances at the BCS. Tough week. This is either going to rally the Broncos or they'll fall apart against Idaho.

Northwestern at Iowa
I stopped betting my games for the time being because I was getting my ass handed to me but I could have made some money on this game. I knew Iowa was incapable of winning by a large margin and they fell apart against the Wildcats. My boy Cory Wooton bent Ricky Stanzi's leg in half and the Wildcats D harrassed Iowa all day. Losing Stanzi didn't help but I think even with a healthy Stanzi, Iowa loses this game. Now Iowa has a chance to play for the Big Ten title against the Buckeyes. Win and the Hawkeyes go to Pasadena.

Navy at Notre Dame
Navy 23, Notre Dame 21. And it wasn't even that close. Notre Dame's defense has been shaky all season but the last time I saw Catholics go down like this some priests got relocated. We all knew what was coming in this one. Navy ran straight up the middle with the fullback and he rumbled right through. I hope some NFL team is looking for a fat offensive coordinator.

Oregon at Stanford
In the last few weeks I've been very impressed by Oregon coach Chip Kelly. It seemed like he handled the Boise loss and the LeGarette Blount mishap the best way it could be handled. Plus he scraped his team off the ground and went on. His team got a lot of national attention this week and maybe it went to their heads. Maybe they just didn't prepare well enough for Stanford's offense. The Cardinal's offense is good but giving up 51 is pretty much excusable.

LSU at Alabama
I lost track of this game a bit because I locked on to the Georgia Tech/Wake Forest game and the Oregon/Stanford game. LSU came out hot and made this game interesting but I was impressed with the way Bama's offensive stars did enough to get the win. Maybe this will quiet some of Greg McElroy's critics.

Oklahoma at Nebraska
The cherry on top of a much better than anticipated College Football Saturday. I knew the Blackshirts would keep Nebraska in the game early, but I was concerned that Oklahoma would wear the Blackshirts down and run away with the game in the second half. Turnovers would have to be the difference and despite being improved in the category, Nebraska doesn't churn out turnovers in mass. Until Saturday. Oklahoma QB Landry Jones threw 5 picks, three of which to safety Matt O'Hanlon (who must be feeling vindicated after costing NU the game against Virginia Tech.)

Nebraska now has to be the odds on favorite to win the North. The Huskers will face Kansas this week and then will need a head to head win against Kansas State to sew up the Division title.
