KU athletic department investigating Mangino
By J. BRADY McCOLLOUGH/The Kansas City Star
LAWRENCE | Kansas football coach Mark Mangino poked senior linebacker Arist Wright in the chest during a Friday walkthrough practice the day before the game at Colorado, sources told The Star on Tuesday evening, triggering an athletic department investigation of Mangino.
On Monday night, KU athletic director Lew Perkins met with the entire football team to discuss concerns relating to Mangino’s treatment of student-athletes. One of those concerns came from Wright, a starting player who sources say told Perkins of his incident with Mangino. At the meeting, where Mangino was not present, KU players were invited to bring information in front of a formal panel that, according to quarterback Todd Reesing, would be unbiased and from outside of the athletic department.
“I can confirm an internal review is under way,” Perkins said in a statement. “It involves a personnel matter, and as a result, is confidential. It would be inappropriate for me to provide further information right now.”
Mangino said Tuesday at his weekly scheduled news conference that he has not lost his team.
“Not one bit,” Mangino said. “I may have lost some people around here, but it’s not the players.”
Yet, with the Jayhawks riding a five-game losing streak into their game Saturday at Texas, it was one of Mangino’s players who brought his concerns to Perkins. And former players told The Star on Tuesday that the incident between Mangino and Wright was far from an isolated occurrence.
And it goes on like that for a while. The paper addresses Mangino's history of being overly tough on players and getting in their faces. Players say they hate playing for him and Mangino and says he has nothing to worry about and these preceedings are the result of a bad season, although QB Todd Reesing refutes that. I mostly agree with Mangino. This wouldn't be going on if Kansas was 8-3 but if Mangino has lost Reesing, that's a bad thing. To sum it all up when you lose they are going to drag out all your flaws (including brawls with the basketball team). And although Perkins isn't saying it, this may have a lot to do with Mangino's weight. That's what Jason Whitlock says, and wouldn't he know?
Weight issues are root of Mangino's problems
By JASON WHITLOCK/The Kansas City Star
It’s the weight. That’s why Mark Mangino’s job is in jeopardy. That’s why Lew Perkins held a paper-trail meeting with Kansas football players Monday night.
If this is the end for Mark Mangino’s head-coaching career at Kansas — and it should be — his inability to deal with his weight problem is the cause.
This column is not an attempt to shame, embarrass or ridicule Mangino. As you know, I’m overweight. I’m a shade over 6 feet tall and this morning, I weighed 325 pounds. (Oh, that hurt to write.) I’ve been heavier. Much.
I can relate to Mangino’s struggle. He’s three or four inches shorter than me, and he weighs anywhere from 450 to 500 pounds. He’s a public figure in a demanding, high-stress job.
The weight and the stress form a perfect recipe for depression. They can put your mind in a very negative place. They can make you moody and volatile.
Full fatty column here.
I agree with Whitlock that this probably has something to do with weight. Mangino is grossly obese. If I were a player it would be hard to take him seriously, especially when he speaks about dedication and discipline. And I'm a fat guy. But he's disgusting. My mom wants to punch the T.V. every time she sees Mangino and she lives with a fat guy and raised two others.
BREAKING NEWS: MANGINO IS A CONFIRMED ASSHOLE.
Just found this on Deadspin. A back and forth between Mangino and a parking cop at Kansas. Classic.
In his written report, Walters said that Mangino had told him that he'd been unloading notebooks and had asked how he could unload without getting a ticket. [Ed note: Yes, yes. "Unload."] Walters responded that he should get a loading permit from one of the parking booths on campus or to contact the office.
"He got out of the car, slammed the door and came within about a half-foot of my face and started yelling at me, saying that I couldn't answer any of his questions and that he works 16-hour days and has no time to get a pass," Walters wrote, in his report ....
"This job gives you power, does it?" Mangino said, according to Walters. "You feel real f—-ing powerful walking around like a big shot, huh? … Why in the hell else would you be bothering me with this?"
No, Walters said, the office had told him to issue tickets for cars parked in the loading zone.
"So offices tell you what to do?" Mangino said, according to Walters. "F—-ing offices walk around telling you what to do all day?"
Mangino eventually got back into his car, Walters said, before continuing: "You just don't like talking to me because I'm ethnic, just because I talk with my hands."
Someone should tell Mangino being Italian doesn't really count as "ethnic" anymore. Unless he agrees to start wearing gold chains and coaching in a baby blue windsuit. He surely eats enough deli meats. Here are a few of my favorite comments from Dead spin readers.
Steve D - In the old neighborhood we used to call him Marky Expressive Ethnic Hands. In fairness, all the clever nicknames were taken by then.
ReturnofHernandez - I call bullshit. It's not possible for his face to be half a foot from yours. His stomach would bump you and you'd move back. You'd never come within a half a foot of him.
Phintastic - You should've seen Mangino flip out this morning when his Facebook account suggested he poke Arist Wright.
