As Buddy Holly Would Say, That'll Be the Day.

Students utilize voter registration drive for May alcohol sales vote

Make Lubbock Wet, an organization promoting the expansion of alcohol sales in Lubbock County, hosted a voter registration drive Wednesday between the Texas Tech Student Union Building and University Library in order to register Tech students for the alcohol sales voting beginning April 27.

Robert Stephenson, a senior wildlife management major from Georgetown and cofounder of Make Lubbock Wet, said the response from Tech students has been positive for both students who chose to register to vote Wednesday and those who already were registered.

"I would say that I've probably seen over 1,000 Tech students out today," Stephenson said, "and of those I'd say one in 10 has made their way over to the booth to register, but there's also been a lot of them who were already registered, too."

Stephenson said most students seemed excited about the prospect of Lubbock becoming a wet county and have been supportive of the drive.

"This is the first time this issue will actually come to a vote in 38 years, so it's pretty exciting," he said. "We just want to spread the word and get students out to vote before they leave school for the summer. We've been putting stickers out and will go to local businesses soon and we have a page on Facebook that has over 3,200 members."

I admire students for trying to change this legislation but its time to face facts. It ain't gonna happen. There have been great students ages before all of you who have fought the good fight and never saw results. While the creation of beer sales in Wolfforth has cut into the Strip a little, the maintainers of the Strip still have a vested interest in keeping beer out of stores in Lubbock and they have the pull to make sure it never happens. So embrace the drive to the liquor store young people. It's something you can always tell your grandkids.

P.S.- I have no idea who those people are in the picture. But they're in front of Doc's. And the song below is my mom's favorite. I hate new country but at least it's about booze.
