Preseason College Football Top 25 - The Have Nots (Part 2)
The college football season is less than one month away and as I try to pass the time between watching baseball highlights and soccer celebration dances, I can't wait for the gridiron action to get started. So, if we can't watch football, we're going to talk football. Welcome to the Preseason College Football Top 25 Countdown.
We're going to continue with the second half of the 10 schools which I expect a good showing from this season but weren't quite promising enough to make my Top 25. Keep your heads up guys - I'm usually wrong about most things.
#30 Cincinnati Bearcats - The Bearcats got seriously close to playing for a national title but after the loss of the head coach who brought the program to prominence, Brian Kelly and the team's two best players (QB Tony Pike and WR Mardy Gillyard). The good news for Cincy is that new coach Butch Jones is a Brian Kelly disciple of sorts and that new starting QB Tony Collaros impressed when in for the injured Pike last season. Unfortunately, the team has some serious defensive concerns, as well as the anxiousness associated with replacing the backbone of the program.
#29 Texas Tech Red Raiders - Color me hopeful about 2010 for the Red Raiders. I made quite an interesting bet with a buddy that could result in Offensive Coordinator Dave Brown's face tattoed on his ass if the Raiders reach 10 wins. I also just read a intriguing article that made a case for Tech as 2010 Big 12 Champs. That said, this year is probably going to be a mix of Tech reaching its potential and Tommy Tuberville getting the grasp on his new team. They'll be outside the Top 25 looking in but with a rejuvenated defense and running game, paired with an always impressive passing attack the sky is the limit and an ass tattoo is well within reach.
#28 Utah Utes - Utah has been one of the most impressive programs in the nation in the past five years with two undefeated seasons and wins against big time programs like Alabama and Cal. The Utes will be led by promising passer Jordan Wynn, who came on strong in the second half of last season. The Utes will also need a strong return by RB Matt Asiata who started 2009 off hot before blowing out his knee.
#27 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets - The Yellow Jackets are going to have to deal with the defections of big time stars like Jonathan Dwyer, Demaryius Thomas and Derrick Morgan to the NFL, which should be a challenge. Offensively, the triple option attack should reload quickly with QB Josh Nesbitt and RB Anthony Allen returning. But new defensive coordinator Al Groh will have his hands full reforming a defense with several holes that finished 96th in the nation last year in points allowed.
26. Georgia Bulldogs - It was only a couple of years ago that all the preseason hype centered squarely on the Dawgs and their national championship hopes. Flash forward to 2010 and Coach Mark Richt looks to be in serious danger of losing his job. This year's Dawgs will be talented in the backfield and along the offensive line. Plus, UGA has one of the nation's best gamebreakers in WR A.J. Green. But Georgia will need new QB Aaron Murray to grow up quick. Meanwhile, the defense will get a complete overhaul to the 3-4. Georgia will have to show signs of improvement there quick before becoming known as the worst defense in the SEC.
