Mashed! Super Bowl Gets 106 Million Viewers
Colts-Saints Super Bowl becomes most watched TV show of all-time
AP
NEW YORK (AP) -- The Super Bowl was watched by more than 106 million people, surpassing the 1983 finale of "M-A-S-H" to become the most-watched program in television history.
The Nielsen Co. estimated Monday that 106.5 million people watched the New Orleans Saints upset the Indianapolis Colts. That beats the "M-A-S-H" finale, which had 105.97 million viewers in an era when there were fewer television sets.
Compelling story lines involving the city of New Orleans and its recovery from Hurricane Katrina and the quest for a second Super Bowl ring for Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning propelled the viewership.
The game also obliterated the record viewership for a Super Bowl -- 98.7 million people in last year's game between Arizona and Pittsburgh.
I'll have to say I enjoyed this Super Bowl game more than any other in recent momeory (with the possible exception of the Giants/Patriots game) but I think this rating may have more to do with the failing economy. Instead of leaving the house or going out to dinner more people probably stayed home to watch the game or went to Super Bowl parties this year to save money. Not to mention, having Peyton Manning vs. the Saviors of a hurricane ravished New Orleans isn't a bad storyline. It may not be Klinger strutting around in a pair of pumps trying to convince Hawkeye to give him his Section 8 but it wasn't too shabby either. I guess we proved that the only thing white people love more than MASH is football.
