Did You Get What You Wanted For Signing Day?
This year I gave up on following the Signing Day hoopla. Of course, between an early shift at the liquor barn and fighting off my chest cold I didn't have much of a choice. But the Callahan years at Nebraska taught me to be suspicious of Signing Day. The Huskers turned out some pretty great classes under Callahan (including a #1 Class in 2005 according to ESPN's Tom Lemming) but it amounted to pretty much nothing, aside from Ndamukong Suh.
The few highlights I did take note of were that USC is still teflon even with Lane Kiffin. Rivals rated USC's class #1, Scout.com had the Trojans at #5 and ESPN had USC at #2. Not too shabby for a douchebag who just ran out on his former team and a program that just went 9-4.
Of course the usual suspects (Texas, OU, Alabama, LSU) were still near the top as was Florida, which ranked in the Top 2 of each outlet's poll, despite a coach that can't decide if he's going to coach 10 more years or fall dead tomorrow.
Then there's always one surprise team. That team this year was Auburn. It may be a bit premature to crown Gene Chizik the next coming of Bear Bryant but a better than expected '09 season and a top 5 recruiting class may make those who lamented his hiring jump the War Eagle Bandwagon.
My Huskers finished 25th in Rivals' poll and 30th in Scout.com, which is more than fine for me. The Big Red even scored a legacy quarterback in Tommie Frazier's cousin Brion Carnes. They also snagged a four star safety from Notre Dame, but lost a defensive lineman from Portland, Owamagbe Odighizuwa, to UCLA. I wasn't too upset with that one. Learning how to pronounce Suh's name was hard enough.
Other teams of note: Scout.com had A&M at #25, while Rivals had the Ags at #15. Meanwhile the Red Raiders were judged a bit more harshly with Scout.com putting Tech at #37 and Rivals picking Tech at #43 (two spots behind Baylor.)
But like I always say about recruiting and creepy dreams. It's best not to think too deeply about them.
