Preseason College Football Top 25 - #21 Washington
The college football season is less than one month away and as I try to pass the time between watching baseball highlights and soccer celebration dances, I can't wait for the gridiron action to get started. So, if we can't watch football, we're going to talk football. Welcome to the Preseason College Football Top 25 Countdown.
#21 Washington Huskies - A bit too high? Possibly. But you have to like the progress Coach Steve Sarkisian has made in his short time at UW. Not to mention the fact that he boasts quite possibly the best quarterback in the nation in Jake Locker.
Washington turned a lot of head in 2009 thanks to an upset of then #3 USC and a gritty early season loss to then #9 LSU. The Huskies capped off '09 with a dismantling of Cal so there's a lot to build on. Aside from Locker the Huskies bring back top rusher Chris Polk and top receiver Jermaine Kearse. The lone bad spot for the UW offense is on the offensive line but with a majority of the starters from 2009 returning this season there has to be hope for improvement.
Defensively, the Huskies will undoubtedly struggled. A much maligned secondary is probably in store for a few bombing outs from Pac 10 offenses. If UW can figure a way to pressure opposing passers there could be some relief but expect Washington to take its lumps on defense.
The early schedule does Washington no favors with non-conference showdowns with BYU, Nebraska and Syracuse but it should prepare them for what will be a wide open race for the Pac 10 Championship.
