356 BC – Herostratus sets fire to the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
1545 – The first landing of French troops on the coast of the Isle of Wight during the French invasion of the Isle of Wight occurs.
1865 – In the market square of Springfield, Missouri, Wild Bill Hickok shoots and kills Davis Tutt in what is regarded as the first true western showdown.
1873 – At Adair, Iowa, Jesse James and the James-Younger gang pull off the first successful train robbery in the American West.
1969 – Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin become the first men to walk on the Moon, during the Apollo 11 mission.

From now on I'm going to also picture the BYB Birthday of the Day beside the calendar. People like pictures. Jon Lovitz, my pick for the 21st, was the marshall at the Mardi Gras parade the year I made my way down.
It was a good birthday for athletes. Besides the ones above there is David Carr and pro wrestler Bob Orton (grandfather of Randy Orton). Also not bad for fat and hairy comedians.
