Billshit! Worst job in NFL???

Sullivan: Top (and middle-of-the-road) coaches send message to Bills
By Jerry Sullivan/NEWS SENIOR SPORTS COLUMNIST

I suppose the average Bills fan doesn't know whether to laugh or cry at this point. But in retrospect, it was a pipe dream to think that any of the top guys, the A-list coaches, would have been remotely interested in coaching the Bills.

Bill Cowher? What chance was there to get Cowher when Cardinals assistant Russ Grimm, who is 50 years old and dreamed of landing his first NFL head job, isn't interested in interviewing with the Bills?

Mike Shanahan? Do you really believe a man with his credentials would have worked for Ralph Wilson, when Brian Schottenheimer, a 36-year-old offensive coordinator with connections to Bills General Manager Buddy Nix, said he was happy to remain with the Jets?

The snubs keep on coming. The latest report is that Stanford's Jim Harbaugh was offered the job but decided to stay at a second-tier college program, presumably to wait for a more attractive NFL opportunity. Harbaugh was my personal choice, a rising star with NFL aspirations. I should have known he'd be shooting higher than the Bills.

The coaching search has become a sad joke. Leslie Frazier is the leading candidate, because he's the only candidate. I'd prefer a coach with an offensive background, but maybe the Bills should hire him and be done with it. If the Bills keep sniffing out new candidates, Frazier might get offended and pull out. If this goes on much longer, they'll be interviewing Joe Frazier.

The process has confirmed that Buffalo is the worst job in the NFL. Yes, even worse than Oakland.

The Raiders have their own erratic owner, Al Davis. But their franchise doesn't farm out games to Canada, and the Bay Area is a more attractive place to live. It wouldn't shock me if Harbaugh wound up there.

The more you look at the situation, the more depressing it becomes. Grimm, who isn't the most polished speaker, left the door open a crack for the Bills, but said he needed to "see what it all contains and pertains to and how it's run."

Sounds to me like Grimm already has a notion of "how it runs" and realizes the Bills are a dysfunctional mess, overseen by a 91-year-old owner who is terrified of giving power to outsiders.

Lost in the shuffle of the musical chairs of NCAA coaches, the playoffs and Gilbert Arenas talk stands the epic fail which is the Buffalo Bills. The Bills fired interim coach Perry Fewell weeks ago but have yet to name his successor, mostly because noone wants to be their coach. I understand the wait if the Bills are trying to get Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, but what if he decides against taking it? How have the Bills fallen so far?

I'll easily admit that Buffalo isn't Malibu. It's a sleepy Northern New York town slightly bigger than Odessa. Having a 91-year-old owner who has no plans for the team's future after his death doesn't help much. But this team isn't that far removed from playing in four straight Super Bowls. But it stopped being an attractive home for free agents. With the end of the salary cap coming this season I'm not even sure the Bills can keep pace with the Pats and Jets this offseason. It's Billshit! Should be same set of rules for everyone.

UPDATE: Jay Glazer: Surprise front-runner for Bills coaching job is Chan Gailey

The Buffalo Bills head coaching search has taken quite the unexpected and surprising turn.

The Buffalo Bills secretly interviewed long-time coach Chan Gailey last week and a source close to Gailey said the coach is slated to meet with owner Ralph Wilson and GM Buddy Nix sometime again Monday, FOXSports.com has learned. As long as talks don’t break down, Gailey is expected to be hired as the Bills head coach within the next 24-48 hours.

Gailey’s name had been kept tightly under wraps, it appears he has now jumped up as a possible favorite to land the open slot.

Well ain't that just a kick in the head? I guess when I wrote noone wants the Bills job I should have clarified and wrote practically noone or noone worth a damn. The Bills were a laughing stock in the preseason for firing their offensive coordinator before the first game. So they went and hired a guy that Kansas City fired as offensive coordinator before the first game. Truly, truly awful. The next step in the inevitable move to Toronto.
